The Story So Far...

The first incarnation of Dog Latin was an electric, eclectic trio that played the Detroit indie circuit for a few years, released a 12" vinyl single called "On Christmas", a hard rocking affair that explored the subject of Christmas depression and mania, then took a hiatus when their drummer, Tom Riss, moved to Nashville.

In 2005, songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Chris McGorey decided to revive the band, switching to an acoustic guitar-based sound. Original Dog Latin bassist Ken Hottmann returned to the fold, and brought with him his wife, Xiao Dong Wei, a master of the Chinese 2-stringed violin know as the erhu. This very unique, dynamic conglomeration proved to be the first of many different musical line-ups for Dog Latin, with the constant being Chris McGorey, writing the songs, singing and playing guitar.

In 2007, McGorey soujourned to Frank Pahl's Private Studios, in Wyandotte Michigan, to record tracks for a full length cd. With help from Pahl on multiple instruments, guitarist Ryan O'Reilly, and guest vocalist Mike Haselhuhn, the cd was recorded from February through May, and released in July 2007. The title: Asunder.

Asunder has received airplay on Michigan radio stations such as WCBN-Ann Arbor, WHFR-Dearborn, WSDP-Plymouth, WNMC-Traverse City, and WXOU-Auburn Hills, as well as A3radio in Ann Arbor, and podcasts "The Open Mike Cafe" and "The Soupy Gato Show". Internationally, the cd has been played on Cambridge, UK, 209radio 105-FM.

In September of 2007, Chris McGorey played Dylanfest, both a tribute show and an annual charity event held at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. Also in September, a Dog Latin combo featuring McGorey along with guitarist John Finan, and guest vocalists Linda Beech and Mike Haselhuhn, appeared at the Jazz Cafe in Detroit's legendary Music Hall, as part of poet M.L. Liebler's "Springfed Thursdays" series.

2007-2008 has been an era of firsts for Chris McGorey/Dog Latin, including an appearance on the bill of John D. Lamb's monthly Songwriter Showcase at Royal Oak's Memphis Smoke, an live set on A3radio,the afore-mentioned Dylanfest and Jazz Cafe shows, and a set at John Latini's Friday night showcase at the Tap Room in Ypsilanti. Besides the Asunder cd, Dog Latin songs have been featured on a compilation cd from the Songwriter's Anonymous collective, a British-released cd tribute to the late singer Kevin Coyne, and an Oasis Disc Manufacturing "Rock and Roots" sampler. An official "CD Release Show" for Asunder finally took place in August 2008, at the Plymouth Coffee Bean, featuring guest friends Clint Lavens (slide guitar, bongos, harmonica and vocals), Bobby Pennock (keyboards, uke, vocals), Mickey Richard (guitar), Nick Johnson (percussion, melodica), and Linda Beech (vocals).
